The device was released with Android Lollipop v5.0 OS, further upgradeable to v5.1, with a planned upgrade to Marshmallow v6.0. The HTC One M9 is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 chipset, while the processor is Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2 GHz Cortex-A57. The graphical processing unit of the device is powered by Adreno 430. The device has an internal storage of 32 GB for installing applications and 3 GB of RAM for running applications. There is no microSD card slot available in the device for installing additional media, such as video or audio. The phone is packed with a Li-ion 2840 mAh capacity battery for a prolonged battery life.

The HTC One M9 features a 20 MP rear camera, capable of clicking photographs of resolution of 5376 x 3752 pixels. The camera of the device is good, and is able to capture fine amount of details. It can also record videos of 2160p at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, and 720p at 120 fps. There is a secondary 4 MP front-facing camera available in the device for clicking selfies and recording videos of 1080p at 30fps.
